Codex Seraphinianus Volume 1, Part 1 : Flora
The first section of the book covers the plant life of the planet being studied, and discusses leaf and root systems, discusses something to do with how branches grow on cuttings, then details lots of strange flowers and plants, many recognisably similar to things we know on Earth, such as the Scissor Plant shown.Plants, on the whole seem to be the way you'd expect them, and such as the case of the Scissors, are obviously utilised by the native inhabitants in many ways, just as we do with plants on Earth.
After the section on flowering plants comes some information about fruit and vegetables, which on the whole are recognisable, whilst being subtly different.
However it's after that that things begin to get really bizarre, with a few pages devoted to trees, apparently showing how trees can split in half (possibly to reproduce) and can climb out of the soil and migrate across water using specially adapted roots for paddles.
Trees also seem to be cared for by people (perhaps the alien equivalient of a nursery) - as people are shown uprooting wilted saplings, then wheeling them around in pram like buggies, only to plant them back in the ground when they've perked up a bit.
The section then has two pages showing the life cycles of two types of plant - the fountainpenplant, and the chairplant, showing diagramatically what regions they grow in, how they develop, and how they are used by man. The final pages of the section show a plant that looks like some kind of daisy, only when its petals are plucked away it can be inflated through the stalk into a large balloon.
